The power plant at Washington University’s School of Medicine roars like a giant hair dryer, growling louder as Jim Stueber…

The power plant at Washington University’s School of Medicine roars like a giant hair dryer, growling louder as Jim Stueber walks closer. In the shadow of the smoke stack, he goes in search of someone to open the door and comes back with employee Kevin Bradley.

“I tell you what,” Bradley shouts over the noise to Stueber, who’s dressed in a white shirt, dress pants and a tie. “You have the whitest shirts I’ve ever seen.”

Stueber smiles, promises to pass the compliment on to his wife, and steps inside.

It’s warm here, with yellow lines traveling across the floors like a roadway and pipes hanging overhead.

When he first started 19 years ago, everything here was a sooty black, covered with years of evidence of coal power. Stueber and his employees started cleaning and discovered white tile bricks, which still neatly line the walls. Only now you can see them. It’s clean and orderly inside the power plant now, with signs on different machines telling the maintenance employees how much money they’ve saved, or which employee is responsible for different pieces of equipment.

“It’s the little things,” says Stueber, director of facilities engineering.

Why Emmaus Homes?

Emmaus Homes is local, and soon to be a new member of our group. Emmaus provides housing and programming for adults with developmental disabilities. Housing includes 2 campuses & 25 independent living houses in St. Charles.

What impact does IFMA have on Emmaus?

Since our relationship began in 2010, IFMA St. Louis has contributed proceeds from our golf tournament, and, members were extremely generous during the holiday season as well. Our summer social is specifically to engage Emmaus residents with people from the community, a big treat for everyone! Going forward we intend to encourage individual volunteering & individual/corporate contributions, as well as annual events.

What Can I Do?

Do you have or know of youth groups or individuals who need service hours?

Do you live in St. Charles County or Warren County and like to cut grass or tend yards?

Are you able to make minor home repairs?

Are you able to assist the Emmaus Homes staff with resources or technical expertise regarding property management and asset management?

If you answered yes to any of the questions, please call Ms. Chris Adams 636-534-5218 or adamsc@emmaushomes.org
