Grow Your Knowledge. Grow Your Career

Professional certification ranks as a key member benefit. So, what do you gain by earning your FMP, CFM or SFP credentials? Plenty. IFMA International research shows that FM competencies provide significant returns:

  • The average five-year return on investment of IFMA credentials is 15:1 for credential holders.
  • On average, IFMA credentials lead to a $6,000 salary increase within the first year.

Closer to home, IFMA St. Louis members find their certification leads to better knowledge, a great network of professionals and a solid investment in your career.

Tauquincy Neal, facilities manager for St. Charles City-County Library District, decided to earn certification in not one but two areas after accepting the position in August 2015. Tauquincy received credentials as an FMP in December 2016. Just two months later, she achieved her SFP designation. Needless to say, she knows the benefits extend far beyond the initials, and she encourages every facility professional to pursue the hallmarks of IFMA’s designations: Here’s her take on how her dual certification has supported her career:

What benefits do you receive with IFMA professional credentials?

Professional certification provides recognition and elevates your career. You may receive a salary increase as part of your company’s educational advancement policies. I certainly have benefited from the networking opportunities, including access to a tremendous knowledge base from professionals both near and far who have attained certification. I’m proud to say that there’s recognition as well. Plaques hang in my office to celebrate the achievements. I’ve been asked to speak at facility-related programs and events. You’ll also receive recognition at IFMA World Workplace.

What would you say to an FM colleague considering pursuing a credential?

This represents a great opportunity to expand your knowledge base, gain confidence and establish yourself as a leading industry professional. Achieving credentials brings credibility and ups the professionalism of our discipline. It also levels the playing field since facility management covers so many different topics, projects and types of facilities. Don’t be afraid. It’s not difficult if you apply yourself.
